How to Discover Your True Self & Experience Freedom
In this article, we're diving deep into the fascinating realm of the True Self. What is the True Self? Where people misunderstand the True Self and how to realise the True Self for freedom from the illusion of suffering.
Buckle up for an exploration of this profound concept that has captivated minds and hearts throughout history.
Introduction to the True Self
So, what is the True Self? Think of it as the real you, stripped of all the masks and layers you put on for the world. It's that inner essence, untouched by the ego and social conditioning. The watcher of thoughts. Pure awareness. Consciousness.
Where People Misunderstand the True Self
I have to add this in here because this term is so often flung around mistakenly and can get confused with concepts like our ‘best self’ or ‘powerful self’. I must admit that I sometimes have used the term wrongly which is why I think it important to clarify.
Some individuals may believe that the True Self represents a state of perfection, free from flaws and imperfections. In reality, the True Self embraces the entire spectrum of human experience, including our imperfections. The True Self does not recognise ‘good’ or ‘bad’, it just is.
Some individuals might believe that realising the True Self is a one-time event or a quick fix to life's problems. In reality, it's often a lifelong journey involving continuous self-awareness and growth. It’s part of the treasure you find on the journey of self-discovery! I say ‘part of’ because I believe every lesson & every blessing is also part of the treasure life has to offer you.
Self-Realisation
Discovering your True Self is the ultimate act of self-realisation and a part of ‘breaking free of the matrix’ or freedom of the illusion of suffering. It's a journey into the depths of your being, a quest for understanding who you truly are.
Distinction from Ego
In Jungian psychology, the ego is the conscious part of your mind that represents your individual identity and self-awareness. It's like the captain of your mental ship, steering your thoughts, emotions, and decisions. The ego helps you navigate the world and interact with others. It's what you usually think of as "you."
The True Self is the opposite, it is your true nature shining through when you let go of the act. The ‘act’ of the ego by the way is programmed into your subconscious mind and transcending this is all part of the journey to self-realisation.
Put more simply: the ego is the part of our psyche we use to interact with the world, whereas the True Self is our core, unchanging nature.
How to Realise the True Self? A Journey of Self-Discovery
The path to the True Self is a journey of self-discovery, it involves practices like meditation, mindfulness and practical exercises to become aware of who you are as a whole being. Tools such as mediation, journaling & shadow work help you dig beneath the surface of your existence. Beyond the conscious mind and into your subconscious. When you can begin to become aware of your subconscious mind you are getting closer to your true nature.
What Awareness of Your True Self Will Bring You:
Connection with Universal Consciousness
Feeling interconnected with everything and everyone around you? That's the True Self at work, reminding you that we're all part of a universal consciousness.
The separation we experience as humans is an illusion, realising the True Self brings you back to wholeness within your Self and oneness with everything and everyone around you.
Transcending Materialism
The True Self encourages you to seek a higher purpose beyond material desires, guiding you towards inner fulfilment. When we’re living a life chasing the desires of our ego, we’re never going to quench the thirst and will always be living in a state of lack & never having enough, no matter how much money we earn or how big our house is.
Inner Peace and Harmony
Connected with your True Self? Expect to find inner peace, emotional balance, and a deep sense of harmony in your life.
Authenticity and Integrity
Living in accordance with your core values and beliefs is a hallmark of the True Self. It's all about being authentic and living with integrity. In order to understand who you are authentically you must begin to explore the unconscious mind and reveal your Shadow Self (a process I highly recommend working with a coach or Jungian analyst for.) You must integrate your shadow before you can fully experience your authentic self and live by your true values rather than your conditioned ones.
Transformation and Growth
As you uncover your True Self, personal transformation and growth become natural byproducts. Say goodbye to limiting beliefs that no longer serve you and hello to your natural inner genius.
Love and Compassion
Love and compassion go hand in hand with the True Self. These qualities foster deeper connections with others and the world because on this journey you have fallen in love with your Self, naturally. Once you love you for all of who you are (light and dark) you are seeing the truth of your nature and that oneness I spoke about earlier.
Learning to fully love and accept yourself for all of who you are will help you realise the True Self.
